Myths About Your AC that May Cost You More Money

Owning a heating and cooling unit is an investment in your home and comfort, and it takes a little money in repairs and service calls from time to time to keep it working in prime condition. However, there are a few instances that homeowners overspend on this piece of equipment when the could be saving money. Here we look at a few myths about your AC system that may be costing you unnecessary money.

Myth #1: You can successfully DIY your AC repairs.

While there are some repairs that you can DIY - if you take on a task that you are not confident or knowledgeable with, trust that it can cost you more money than you bargained for.

In some cases, you may not get to the root of the problem and only end up repairing the surface, and this can result in a major repair in the future. A pro technician will have the trained eye to dig deeper into the issue to ensure all repairs are diagnosed and corrected.

Plus, if the AC repairs don't go as planned or an error is made, not only can this create an unsafe situation, but it can end in emergency heating and cooling services that will come with higher price tag.

Myth #2: If your cooling system doesn’t reach a set temperature, it doesn’t work.

While the latest technology in HVAC units is fantastic when it comes to energy usage and reliability, it will still have some practical limitations. If the temperature is over one hundred degrees outside and you set the thermostat below sixty degrees, it will be difficult to reach that temp without putting a great deal of strain on your unit.

Speak with an AC technician about the capabilities of your unit, how energy efficient your home is, and the best temperatures to set your thermostat at. The best rule of the thumb is to go no more than fifteen to twenty degrees lower than the temperature outside in the summer. Remember, when your heating and cooling unit works overtime, the wear and tear will cause it to need more frequent (and expensive) repairs, and it will have a shorter lifespan.

Myth #3: You can skip the yearly service call.

While it may seem like skipping the cost of an annual service call will be what saves you money, in the long run, you will discover that those yearly maintenance calls will actually prevent both major and minor repairs, as well as prolong the lifespan of your unit saving you hundreds, if not thousands.
