Believe it or not, spring is around the corner – it will be upon us before you know it. Is your HVAC system ready to handle the demands of warmer weather? Even if you have a fairly new system, it still needs regular maintenance to run properly. The last thing you want to deal with is the discomfort of a broken-down air conditioning unit in the dead of summer – not to mention the expense.
Dirty HVAC systems cost you money! According to the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), your HVAC system could be costing you an additional $1000 per cooling season to run if it isn’t clean and properly maintained, due to dirty coils and clogged filters.
How can you avoid unnecessary HVAC issues and expenses? By making sure you schedule a twice-yearly maintenance check with a qualified contractor. A spring service is especially important because of the harsh winter weather’s potential effects on your HVAC equipment. HVAC contractors will perform the following on your HVAC unit during the maintenance service:
· Inspect the Evaporator Coil to ensure that it functions properly, is clean and that the unit can drain sufficiently
· Inspect the air conditioning filters
· Inspect the unit’s wiring and all connections
· Check the refrigerant charge according to manufacture specifications
· Inspect the Condenser Coil for cleanliness and efficiency
· Check the unit’s temperature drop (if it feels overly warm, there may be a problem)
Is there anything you can do on your own? While you should definitely leave the trickier maintenance work to a professional, there is one “DIY” task that you should definitely perform on a regular basis: changing your air-conditioning filter. Pleated Air filters require changing one to three months; standard fiberglass filters need to be replaced more frequently, and electronic air cleaners need to be cleaned per manufacture specifications.
With a little advanced planning, you can have your HVAC system ready for spring, and save money and hassle in the process.
