Plumbing Safety Tips Everyone Should Know!

In some instances, you may be able to solve minor plumbing issues yourself. However, some homeowners make mistakes when completing DIY plumbing repairs that can lead to injury. If you are completing plumbing repairs yourself, here are three important safety tips that everyone should know.

Don’t Plunge or Snake After Using Drain Cleaner

It is highly recommended that you avoid using chemical drain cleaners. They can be rough on your pipes and are bad for the environment. But, if you have already used one and have found that the clog in your drain is still present, the last thing you should do is attempt to plunge or snake the drain. Plunging or snaking the drain can cause the chemicals to come back up the drain. It can injure your skin or your eyes. If you have chemicals in your drain and the drain cleaner has not freed the clog, you will need to contact a plumber to help. Be sure to inform them that there are chemicals in the drain.

Unplug the Garbage Disposal Before Inserting Your Hand

If you have a clog in your garbage disposal or are looking to replace the blades on your disposal, you will need to reach your hand into the drain. Before you do so, be sure to unplug the garbage disposal. Many people have been injured when inserting their hand into the drain and then having the blades unexpectedly begin turning as they are trying to fix or repair a problem. Garbage disposal repairs can be complicated, so in many cases, these types of repairs are best left to a professional.

Don’t Adjust Your Hot Water Heater Higher Than 120 Degrees

The last plumbing safety tip that you should know is not to adjust your hot water heater higher than 120 degrees Fahrenheit. If your hot water heater is not producing as much hot water as you would like, or the water isn’t hot enough, you may be tempted to turn the hot water heater to a higher setting. Unfortunately, this can lead to scalding hot water that can cause burns. If your hot water heater isn’t heating water properly, a plumber can determine what the problem is and repair it, rather than simply turning the temperature setting higher.
