Avoiding Dryness in Your Home During Cold Winter Months

Cold weather might be part of the festive season, but it can also wreak havoc on your health if you’re not careful. We’ve spoken in a previous post about common winter HVAC issues, including loss of heat, airflow issues, and frozen pipes. Another common problem in the winter months: dryness. When you turn up the heat in your house, it’s hard to avoid the dry skin, chapped lips, static electricity, and even asthma, eczema, and nosebleeds that it can cause. And keeping your home heated isn’t really an option, is it?

Fortunately, modern HVAC systems are becoming more and more sophisticated when it comes to maintaining a good level of humidity while also offering a comfortable level of heat. You may want to consider installing a whole house humidifier to your furnace, to avoid the harmful effects of too little humidity during the cold season.

The two more effective types of whole house humidifiers include:

Flow-Through Systems use evaporative technology to conserve water while delivering moisture throughout your house. As water drips through a water panel, your HVAC blows air through the panel, essentially “flowing” the resulting moisture through your home. These flow-through humidifier systems avoid mold issues and are economically efficient; the newer systems allow for digital control, which in turn enable delivery of accurate humidity levels and alert you when you need to replace the water panel.

Steam Humidifier Systems are probably the most technologically advanced whole-house humidifiers on the market. Utilizing steam technology to effectively dispense steam humidity throughout your house, these humidifiers are completely automatic – which makes your job a lot easier, because you don’t have to worry about controlling them manually (although you can if you want to – they have manual control capabilities as well). And you avoid the issue of duct condensation, because of the efficiency of the steam dispersion.
