What's Your A/C IQ?

We’ve talked in a recent post about the importance of spring-cleaning your HVAC system, to prepare for the warm summer months. Well, those months are finally upon us. Hopefully you’ve already had your HVAC system inspected – and updated/repaired, if necessary – by a certified contractor. (If not, don’t delay! Check out SSI’s Coupons & Specials page for $50 off an air conditioning service call.)

While you’re preparing yourself for the onslaught of hot temperatures, take a look at a few helpful tips for raising your “air conditioning IQ”. You’ll increase your family’s comfort in the steamy weather – and even save some money in the process!

Program the thermostat on your A/C to the warmest temperature at which you still feel comfortable – ideally, at least 75º F. According to Hawaiian Electric Company, each degree you maintain your house temperature at above 75º F saves roughly 3% of the energy used to cool your home.

Utilize your Programmable Thermostat when you’re not home – and program the Thermostat to go up or back 3 degrees. Programmable thermostat’s can save you up to 30% on your utility bill when used properly.

Change your air filter regularly. We’ve mentioned this before but it bears repeating; it’s one of the easiest, most cost-effective ways to keep your house cooler, your energy bills lower, and your A/C system in better condition. A dirty air filter leads to reduced airflow and increased condensation in your air conditioning unit, putting stress on it and potentially leading to damage. Change your filter every one to two months (or more often if you suffer from outdoor allergies).

Wait until evening to run your dishwasher, clothes dryer and oven.  As Larry Cavalier of Filtrete’s™ Healthy Home Authority notes, these three appliances use a lot of energy and generate a lot of heat. If you run them in the evening, your air conditioning unit doesn’t have to work as hard to keep the air cooler.
